How to Fish Cooking, Grill & Lava Heals

Blue Shark unlocks the grill. Lava is faster. Dip dirty guns in water after 1.0.10.

Cooking & Grill Guide

Cooking in How to Fish is a heal pipeline, not a restaurant sim with per-fish stat tables. Raw catches keep you alive. Cooked fish heal more reliably. The important grill is on Island 3 after you deal with the Blue Shark using a Standard Boss Lure and talk through the grill quest (Grillmaster). Do not expect a tutorial grill on the Lighthouse that grants five-minute catch-rate buffs — that loop is not how the live game is documented.

Island 2’s Dinnertime achievement is the Giant Piranha Skeleton hand-in to the forest lady, not a plated meal. Vacation is the Tourist / endangered fish step that produces the Carrot. Keep those trophies out of the fire.

Unlocking the grill

  1. Reach the Desert (Island 3) via the Walkthrough.
  2. Buy a Standard Boss Lure and catch the Blue Shark.
  3. Follow the local grill NPC / Grillmaster step so the station actually lights.
  4. Cook spare fish before Pufferfish. The roll fight is a heal check as much as a gun check.

If the grill will not start, you are missing the shark or the island quest, not a hidden recipe book.

How cooking works

Put a fish on the heat and watch it. Pull it while it is cooked. Leave it until it burns for Yummy in my tummy. Burnt fish is for the achievement, not for a boss. In co-op, call the grill so two people do not waste the same tuna.

Lava on Island 5 cooks faster — about 1.5× — and does not use the same timing window as the desert grill. Players stacking heals for Mutated Bowhead Whale often dynamite a pile of fish, cook them in lava, and leave a stash near the military camp. Before Patch 1.0.10 those piles vanished on quit. Now the game saves up to 64 ground items, prioritizing weapons, tools, quest items, and creatures. A carpet of snacks may still exceed the cap.

Weapons in the kitchen

Patch 1.0.10 lets you dip weapons and tools in water to clean cooking residue. If a gun looks breaded, dunk it. That is a hygiene fix, not extra damage.

Heals during bosses

Eat when you get tagged. Easy mode (Patch 1.0.9) means fewer bites; Hard mode means a larger cook pile. The lava whale sequence is two fights in a row — regular Bowhead then mutated — so cook before you throw the carcass in the crater. See Boss Fights and Difficulty Settings.

Achievements tied to heat

  • Grillmaster: start the Island 3 grill after the lure / shark step.
  • Yummy in my tummy: burn a fish on purpose.
  • Dinnertime: Giant Piranha Skeleton to the forest lady — not a cook quest.

Competitive eating (consume a mini-boss) is a separate eat-the-corpse gag. Do not confuse it with grilling.
