How to Fish All Bosses — Bait, Window, Hand-in
Five story fights carry the map. A bigger gun cannot spawn a boss you never triggered.
Bosses are the gate on every island in How to Fish. None of them wander the water waiting to be found. Each one is summoned by a specific item on your rod, and each one leaves behind a distinctive trophy that an NPC has to accept before the Radar writes new coordinates. Players who stall for hours almost never have a damage problem — they have a trigger problem or a hand-in problem.
The story route is five fights. Spider Crab unlocks the boat at the Lighthouse. Giant Piranha opens Island 3. Pufferfish opens Island 4. Albatross — the terrorizing bird — opens the military and volcano route. The Mutated Bowhead Whale closes the chain and rolls the credits. Everything else is optional income or setup, collected on the mini-bosses page.
Boss route at a glance
| Boss | Island | Spawn trigger | Hand-in unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spider Crab | Lighthouse | Empty Beer Can | Boat Keys |
| Giant Piranha | Forest | Modified Leech | Island 3 coordinates |
| Pufferfish | Desert | Carrot | Island 4 coordinates |
| Albatross | Rocks | Dead Tuna on the ground | Volcano route |
| Mutated Bowhead Whale | Volcano | Whale carcass thrown in the crater | RHIB keys, ending |
Three of those triggers are not shop items. The Empty Beer Can comes back after the Lighthouse Keeper drinks a Beer you bought for him. The Modified Leech is returned after you feed three leeches to the woman by the lake. The Carrot comes from the tourist under the tree once you give him an endangered catch. Shop lures never substitute for a quest item — see Lures & Bait for the tiers that do come from a shop.
Rules that apply to every fight
Watch the white escape bar under the health pool. When it drains the boss leaves and the attempt resets, so time spent kiting at long range or deleting trash is time taken from the kill. Let the creature commit first: most bosses telegraph a charge, slam, or roll and then leave a short stunned window, and that window — not a braver approach — is where your damage goes. Step sideways rather than backwards so you leave the line of the attack instead of staying in it.
Eat between hits. Hunger loses more attempts than raw boss damage does, and cooked food is the cheapest defence in the game. From the Desert onward the grill multiplies both healing value and sale value, which is covered in Cooking & Grill and Hunger & Healing. Bring a real weapon with at least the early bullet upgrades, and fill the four slots described in Weapon Attachments before the final fight.
Patch 1.0.9 added Easy and Hard modes that scale every creature’s health and damage, so a fight that feels impossible can simply be re-scaled — details in Difficulty Settings. Patch 1.0.10 saves up to 64 dropped items between sessions, which means you can stash cooked heals near an arena instead of carrying everything.
Before you sell anything
Inspect the drops. Ordinary meat from a boss corpse is not the progression item, and several unlocks fail permanently for that run if the real trophy is gone. Keep the shell, skeleton, fin, head, or carcass, sell the rest, and price the leftovers using Fish Prices. The island-by-island order lives in the Walkthrough.
