How to Fish Giant Piranha — The Forest Lake Gate
The boss is not the problem. The pack of small piranhas that spawns with it is.
The Giant Piranha is the second story boss in How to Fish and the gate on the Forest island. Unlike the Spider Crab it is not a pure duel: the fight ships with a swarm, and players who treat it as a one-on-one melee brawl get chewed from three directions while the escape timer drains. This is also the point where the game stops forgiving a melee-only build.
The fight lives at the lake inland rather than on the coast, so bring everything you need before you walk in. There is no shop beside the arena and no time to sail back for a gun.
Unlock the Modified Leech
The trigger is a quest item, not a purchase. Find the woman by the lake and take her request for leeches. Leeches are picked up on the ground around the water rather than fished, so sweep the bank and collect three of them. Hand all three over and she returns a Modified Leech.
That Modified Leech is the only bait that spawns the boss. A Beginner Boss Lure from the shop summons The Old Pike instead, which is a genuinely useful practice fight but does nothing for progression. If nothing surfaces when you cast, you are almost always holding the wrong item — check Lures & Bait to confirm what each tier actually pulls.
Bring a gun
Do not attempt this with knuckles or a knife alone. The pack makes melee positioning miserable, and the boss itself leaps and bites at a range that punishes standing still. A shotgun is the standard answer at this stage: high burst, forgiving aim, and enough stopping power to clear minions in one shell. Buy the early bullet upgrades too — the first tiers cost about $20 to $40 and pay for themselves immediately, as broken down in Weapons & Rods.
Carry healing. Cooked food is not available yet on this island because the grill unlocks later on the Desert, but raw catches and clams still restore something, and the bite damage here is high enough that going in at partial health usually ends the attempt. Hunger & Healing covers what actually restores the most.
Fight pattern
Cast the Modified Leech and reel. The Giant Piranha comes up with a pack of smaller piranhas that spawn around it and keep spawning as the fight runs.
Thin the pack first, but only enough to see clearly. The trap is spending the whole escape timer deleting minions while the boss health bar barely moves — the swarm regenerates, so total clears are wasted shells. Kill whatever is directly blocking your line, then commit the rest of your ammunition to the boss itself.
The boss telegraphs with a jump before it bites. Move sideways when it launches rather than backing up in a straight line, because a backwards retreat keeps you inside the landing arc. Circle wide, keep the lake at your back rather than a tree that can trap you, and reload during the recovery instead of during the approach. Eat between exchanges. On Hard mode from Patch 1.0.9 both the boss and the pack hit 25% harder, and on Easy the whole arena becomes very manageable — see Difficulty Settings.
Hand in the skeleton
When it dies, look through the drops for the Giant Piranha Skeleton. That is the progression item, not the meat. Carry the skeleton back to the woman by the lake and give it to her; she responds with the coordinates for Island 3, and the Radar updates. Sell the leftover meat afterwards, priced in Fish Prices.
If the Radar never changed, the hand-in did not register or the skeleton was sold by mistake. From here the route runs to the Desert island and the Pufferfish; the full chain sits in the Walkthrough and the species list in Forest Island.
