How to Fish NPCs — Who Takes Which Trophy

Four story people. Feed them the weird piece, not generic meat.

NPCs & Quests Guide

NPCs in How to Fish are the progression system. You do not unlock the next island by catching a rarer common fish. You unlock it by giving a named person a distinctive trophy. Selling that piece to the wrong mouth, inserting it into a Reel of Fortune, or leaving it on the sand before Patch 1.0.10 could stall the Radar. This page lists the people the campaign actually uses. It does not invent a Beach Bum, a Late-Night Fisher, or a post-credits Mysterious Figure.

Talk to everyone on a new rock. Live quest text wins if a nickname here disagrees with the UI.

Lighthouse Keeper (Island 1)

Where: the lighthouse rock you wake on.

Shop: clams-to-cash by feeding him, Crab Fishing Rod ($3), Beer ($12), Brass Knuckles ($24), Knife ($45), Radar ($10) after the crab.

Story quests:

  • Feed clams for early money.
  • Who stole my beer: give a full Beer, keep the Empty Beer Can, bait Spider Crab, return the Shell for Boat Keys.

He is the merchant. There is no second shopkeeper on a Starting Beach market stall. If you cannot buy a rod, you are talking to the wrong animation or you have not fed him yet.

Forest lady (Island 2)

Where: the lake / forest interior after the Spider Crab unlock.

Story quests:

  • Three ground leeches (paths and grass, not a fishing pool) → Modified Leech bait.
  • Dinnertime: Giant Piranha Skeleton hand-in. This is not a cooked plate from Island 1.

Shop nearby: shotgun, dynamite ($25), Beginner Lure / Beginner Boss Lure, cheap engine ($230, Getting an upgrade).

Her trophy opens the Desert. Do not grill the skeleton.

Tourist (Island 3)

Where: Desert island, often under a tree / on the beach.

Story quests:

  • Vacation: an endangered catch (Needlefish, Bowl Fish, or Seahorse) for the Carrot.
  • Carrot baits Pufferfish. Keep the puffer trophy / Fin remnant and complete the local hand-in so Rocks coordinates appear.

Side: Blue Shark with a Standard Boss Lure is the grill / Grillmaster step for the cook station. That is a heal unlock, not a second tourist escort.

Scientist / military (Island 5)

Where: Volcano / military camp.

Story quests:

  • Five volcano-native fish → Fish Bucket.
  • Bowhead Whale on the bucket, carcass into the crater, Mutated Bowhead Whale.
  • Whale Fin → RHIB / military keys → mainland (We are so back).

Shop nearby: Scientific Lure ($500), Scientific Boss Lure ($5,800), Assault Rifle and attachments (Fully equipped).

Island 4 islanders

The Rocks NPCs hide in huts while the Albatross is active. They want the bird dealt with. Catch Tuna on a Professional Boss Lure (~$1,200), drop the body, fight from cover, keep the head. Terrorizing bird is the achievement name. The head is the Volcano coordinate.

What they are not

They are not a rotating gacha shop. They are not night-only spawn tables. Happy birthday Curtis is a cake interaction, not a hidden NPC route. Seagulls are pests, not quest givers. Co-op: any teammate can fetch the item, but the player who talks to the NPC turns it in—do not sell the trophy while someone else is in the dialogue.

Patch 1.0.10 keeps up to 64 ground items, prioritizing weapons, tools, quest pieces, and creatures. Still put trophies in inventory before you sail.
