How to Fish Mutated Bowhead Whale — The Lava Whale
The one real wall in the run. It is won on movement and food, not on a better gun.
The Mutated Bowhead Whale is the final boss of How to Fish and the only fight most players actually lose repeatedly. Everything before it can be brute-forced with patience. This one cannot, because there is no pause between the setup and the fight: the moment you throw the whale carcass into the crater, the lava whale spawns and you are committed with whatever you are carrying.
Read the prep section before you start the sequence. The most common way runs fail here is arriving at the arena with three cooked fish and a half-upgraded rifle.
Prepare first — there is no restock break
Build the assault rifle and fill all four attachment slots. This is the fight the fully kitted rifle exists for, and doing it also drops the Fully equipped achievement on the way — the slot breakdown is in Weapon Attachments.
Stock a serious pile of lava-cooked fish. Lava on the volcano cooks anything to exactly 1.5x with no timing minigame and no burn risk, so there is no reason to arrive with raw food. Since Patch 1.0.10 up to 64 dropped items persist between sessions, which means you can legitimately stash a healing pile near the military base before you climb. Farming the island with Scientific Lures pays for all of it — see Money-Making and Fish Prices.
Spawn the lava whale
The sequence has four steps and none of them can be skipped.
First, talk to the hazmat-suited scientist on the volcano island and complete her request for five volcano fish. She hands over the Fish Bucket. Second, use the Fish Bucket as bait to hook the regular Bowhead Whale, and kill it. The normal whale charges across the arena and launches into the sky before slamming down on your position, so run the instant it goes up. It is far weaker than the mutated version.
Third, pick up the dead whale — do not sell it, and do not treat it like an earlier trophy hand-in. Carry the carcass up the volcano using the wooden planks to the crater at the summit. Fourth, equip the carcass and throw it into the open lava pool. That throw spawns the Mutated Bowhead Whale immediately, so drop back down to the supplies you stashed near the military base.
If the final boss never appears, you either threw a whale you had not killed or lost the carcass on the way up.
Fight both phases
Fight on the flat military ground and stay inside the encounter boundary. Dragging the boss toward your boat does not create a safer arena — pulling it too far from the volcano can despawn it and reset the whole encounter, and the water is not a safe zone either.
Phase one is stomps, lava meteorites, and pools of lava left on the floor. Treat every pool as instant-fail ground and strafe around them rather than through them. Eat a cooked fish every single time you take damage instead of waiting until you are nearly dead — food is the resource that decides this fight.
Phase two is where runs end. The whale becomes far more aggressive, stomps almost constantly, and periodically leaps into the sky to attack from above. Never stand still. When its movement changes into a launch or a meteor sequence, stop firing and cross out of the landing path without running to the arena edge. After it lands, give the body space before you walk back in; the follow-up movement catches people who sprint in to shoot too early. Reload during the gap, not during the approach. In co-op, spread out so one landing cannot catch the whole group — roles are in the Co-op Guide. Easy mode from Patch 1.0.9 is a fair option here, per Difficulty Settings.
For the Handyman achievement — defeat the final boss with bare hands — only the killing blow counts. Fight normally with the rifle, chip it to a sliver, then unequip and punch. Brass knuckles do not count. More in All Achievements.
Hand in the Whale Fin
You know it worked when the notification reads “New Creature Caught: Mutated Bowhead Whale” and a Whale Fin drops. The fin alone does not end the game. Take it to the scientist, receive the RHIB keys, start the RHIB, and the credits roll — the departure itself is covered in Ending & RHIB. This fight also completes the Deadliest catch achievement for helping the military. Volcano species are listed in Volcano Island, and the full route in the Walkthrough.
