How to Fish Weather Cycles, Time of Day and Storm Appearances
The barometer predicts storms 24 hours ahead. Midnight Eel bites after midnight during rain. Bosses need storms.
Weather and time are not cosmetic in How to Fish. Storm cycles trigger the appearance of legendary bosses on Islands 4 and 5. Nocturnal-exclusive species like the Midnight Eel only appear after midnight. The barometer predicts weather 24 game hours ahead, allowing you to plan a fishing session around rare appearances.
Players who ignore the clock and weather waste expensive durability and miss story-unlocking catches. This page documents the documented time and weather mechanics through Patch 1.0.10.
Game Time
The game clock runs continuously. A full day-night cycle takes a fixed amount of real time. Key time windows for species:
| Species | Island | Time Window | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midnight Eel | 3 | 00:00–04:00 | Only during rain |
| Various Drip Variants | All | Any time | Spawn rate not time-limited |
| Standard Catches | All | Any time | No time restriction |
The Midnight Eel on Island 3 is the clearest example. Cast at 04:01 and you catch normal fish. At 00:00 during rain, the eel has a chance to bite. The window is narrow — 4 hours — and it must be raining.
Weather States
The game has at least three weather states:
- Clear: Normal fishing conditions. Most species available.
- Rain: Some species more active. Required for Midnight Eel.
- Storm: Lightning, high waves. Required for legendary boss appearances on Islands 4 and 5.
Storm cycles occur randomly every 3 to 5 game days. They do not follow a fixed schedule. The barometer predicts the next storm 24 hours ahead.
Storm Cycles and Boss Appearances
Legendary bosses on Islands 4 and 5 appear only during active storm cycles:
- The Bowhead Whale requires whale bait and an active storm.
- The Mutated Bowhead Whale triggers when the Bowhead Whale corpse enters volcanic lava during a storm.
If you use whale bait during clear weather, the Bowhead Whale will not appear. Check the barometer before making the trip to Island 5.
Storm cycles also affect the catch rate for high-value volcano species. During a storm, the Scientific Lure pool is more likely to produce Anglerfish, Stonefish, and Superdwarf Fish.
The Barometer
The barometer is a purchasable item from the Island 2 tackle shop. It is an essential tool for any completionist:
- Predicts storm cycles 24 game hours ahead.
- Displayed as an icon in the UI when equipped or in inventory.
- Does not show exact times — only that a storm is approaching.
Buy it early on Island 2 and keep it in a visible inventory slot. It is the difference between arriving at the volcano during a storm and wasting a $500 Scientific Lure on clear-weather catches.
Day and Night Visually
Night fishing changes the atmosphere but not all species. The practical difference:
- Night catches use the same lure pools as during the day.
- The Midnight Eel is the primarily nocturnal-exclusive species.
- Some players report higher Drip variant spawn rates at night, but this is unconfirmed.
Night on Island 3 during rain is the optimal window for the Midnight Eel. Position your boat over deep water and cast with organic cut bait or the Standard Lure.
Patch 1.0.10 Weather Notes
Patch 1.0.10 did not change the weather or time mechanics. It:
- Saved up to 64 ground objects, allowing you to pre-position bait piles before a predicted storm.
- Limited explosion velocity so objects do not fly out of the world during storms.
- Fixed various physics issues that could occur during storm transitions.
