How to Fish Easter Eggs & Hidden Secrets
Discoverable surprises scattered across the five islands
How to Fish hides a handful of secrets beyond its five-island story. Some are intentional jokes from Dazed Games. Others are community discoveries that the developers quietly left in the code. This page documents what players have found through Patch 1.0.12.
Bing Bong — Desert Coconut
The Bing Bong coconut in the Desert island is one of the most discussed secrets. It sits in a specific location and has a unique interaction compared to regular coconuts. Finding and opening it triggers a special reaction from nearby NPCs. The details of what happens when you crack it open have become a community talking point.
Flying Boat — Island 2 Dynamite
The flying boat is not in the story. It is a player-discovered method using dynamite under a boat hull to launch it into the air. This became so popular it earned its own Steam achievement: I’m the bird now. The basic method involves bundling dynamite beneath the floating hull and detonating. Players have since found variations that send the boat higher or further. Patch 1.0.10 capped explosion velocity, which affected how far loot travels from these explosions but did not eliminate the stunt.
Empty Beer Can — More Than Trash
The Empty Beer Can is the Spider Crab bait and a quest item. But players noticed that the Lighthouse Keeper reacts differently when you hand over a full Beer versus an Empty Can. The NPC dialogue changes based on what you give, making the simple trade-in feel less automatic.
Reel of Fortune Skins
The Reel of Fortune slot machine accepts creature inserts. What players discovered is that inserting Drip variants produces different skin outcomes than inserting normal creatures. The community has been cataloging which creature produces which skin result, creating an informal drop table that Dazed Games has not officially confirmed.
Seagull Theft
Seagulls are not just ambient birds. They actively steal landed fish and can erase a Killscore multiplier you already earned. What players discovered is that shooting a seagull while it is carrying a stolen fish sometimes drops the fish back to the ground intact. This makes seagull control an unintended but practical part of Killscore farming.
Hidden NPC Reactions
NPCs on each island have additional dialogue that does not trigger on the first visit. Returning to the Lighthouse Keeper after completing the full island chain produces a different send-off line. The tourist on the Desert island has conditional dialogue depending on whether you brought them an endangered catch versus a common fish.
Lava Cooking Timing
The Volcano lava on Island 5 is not just a cooking surface. Players found that the lava has a timing window where fish reach maximum cook value (approximately 1.5x multiplier) without burning. The window is short enough that experienced players developed a visual cue — watching for the fish color change — rather than timing by count.
Community Discord Discoveries
Dazed Games opened a fanart channel on the Community Discord during Patch 1.0.10. The developers have been responsive to community finds, confirming some secrets while leaving others ambiguous. Players who want to report new discoveries should check the Discord for established channels.
Patch 1.0.10 Ground Stash Surprise
Before Patch 1.0.10, dropping items on the ground meant losing them on quit. The patch changed this behavior. What players discovered afterward is that the 64-item cap includes quest trophies and boss corpses, but weapons and tools have highest priority. This hidden priority system was not documented in official patch notes but was reverse-engineered by the community within days.
Steam Cloud Save Quirks
Patch 1.0.12 added Steam Cloud support. A community-discovered quirk: if you launch the game on a device with no existing save, Steam Cloud may briefly show a conflict before syncing the cloud save down. This is a synchronization sequence, not data loss. Exiting and relaunching resolves it.
