How Long to Beat How to Fish
Main story, completionist, and Bean speedrun estimates
How to Fish game length depends entirely on what kind of player you are. A focused story run takes two to four hours. Full completion — Fishipedia, achievements, all five islands — takes fifteen to twenty-five hours. A Bean speedrun, which is the in-game achievement for finishing in under one hour, is a documented category on the speedrun leaderboards with version-split rules.
This page covers game length estimates based on documented community runs through Patch 1.0.10. Steam Deck Verified status from Patch 1.0.11 does not change playtime; it only confirms the game runs well on handheld hardware.
Main story length
The five-island story chain (Lighthouse → Forest → Desert → Rocks → Volcano) is designed to take two to four hours on a first playthrough. This estimate assumes:
- Following the intended progression without island skips (Patch 1.0.5 removed island skip shortcuts)
- Basic combat competence — dying to bosses adds time, sometimes significant time
- Not stopping to farm money, explore optional areas, or engage with side content
The first island (Lighthouse) is the longest tutorial. Learning the rod mechanics, the Spider Crab fight, and the radar system takes thirty to sixty minutes alone. Experienced players who know the crab bait and boat route can cut this significantly.
Each subsequent island adds forty to sixty minutes for the story encounter, NPC hand-in, and shop transition. Island 4 (Rocks) is the longest mid-game island because the Albatross requires waiting for the bird to land on a Tuna corpse — players who do not know this often spend extra time confused.
Island 5 (Volcano) story takes thirty to ninety minutes depending on weapon loadout. The Bowhead Whale plus Mutated Bowhead Whale is a two-phase fight that punishes under-equipped players. The ending sequence is short once the Whale Fin is handed in.
Completionist length
Full completion in How to Fish means different things to different players. A reasonable definition includes:
- All five story islands completed
- All normal fish species caught (Collector achievement)
- All Drip variant species caught (Fishipedia completion)
- All achievements unlocked
- All shops purchased at least once
Community estimates for this level of completion run fifteen to twenty-five hours. The wide range reflects Drip spawn randomness — Fishipedia in particular can extend indefinitely if the player has bad RNG, though most players report finishing within this window.
The grindiest single achievement is likely Grillmaster (cook every fish type) because it requires catching and cooking every species in the game at least once. This is a parallel goal to Fishipedia, not a prerequisite.
Money is the other time gate. Some late-game weapons and lures cost thousands of dollars. Players who farm efficiently (always sell, always fish the highest available lure tier) finish faster than players who get distracted by gambling or exploration.
Bean speedrun
The Bean achievement requires finishing the game in under one hour. This is a tracked Steam achievement and a documented speedrun category. The rules:
- Must start from a fresh save file or a save before the first island is unlocked
- Timer starts when the save is created
- Timer ends when the military boat is boarded after the Whale Fin hand-in
- Any island skip after Patch 1.0.5 is forbidden — the intended route must be followed
- Difficulty can be set to Easy to reduce boss fight duration
The current community record as of September 2026 is approximately forty-seven minutes. The average competitive speedrun is fifty to fifty-five minutes.
Key time saves in the speedrun route:
- Skip all fishing except what is required for story bait
- Do not sell fish — the Knife and radar purchase are the only required buys before the final boat
- Skip the grill unlock (Blue Shark) — it is not required for the story
- On Volcano, skip the Goblin Shark — it is a Collector-only encounter
- Use Easy difficulty to reduce boss health and damage
Co-op and game length
Co-op does not significantly change the main story length. Two players still need to complete the same five-island chain. The advantage is faster boss kills (more weapons = more damage) and the ability to split objectives (one player shops while the other fishes).
Co-op can extend completionist time if players split up to cover more ground simultaneously, but the overall session length for full completion is similar to solo play. The main advantage is not having to do everything yourself.
Patch 1.0.4 allowed lobbies of up to eight players. Larger parties do not make the story faster beyond a certain point — boss HP does not scale with party size in the story encounters.
Patch 1.0.11 and post-game
Patch 1.0.11 added no new story content. The patch focused on Steam Deck Verified status, GeForce NOW support, and control settings. Game length estimates remain unchanged from the Patch 1.0.10 data.
Post-game content is limited. After the ending, players typically engage with:
- Fishipedia completion (Drip farming, rare spawns)
- Achievement hunting (speedruns, no-hit runs, specific kill methods)
- Reel of Fortune skin collection
- Multiplayer with friends
There is no new game plus, no additional story DLC, and no procedural endless mode as of Patch 1.0.11.
