How to Fish Co-op — Lobbies, Invites, Boss Roles

Store pitch is 1–4 players. Patch 1.0.4 raised lobby size to eight.

Co-op Multiplayer Guide

How to Fish is built as an online co-op hangout. The Steam page still sells a 1–4 player physics fishing sim, and that is the intended party size for most jokes. Patch 1.0.4 added support for lobbies of up to eight. Patch 1.0.5 added private invite-only lobbies and a session-type switch in server settings (restart after changing). Patch 1.0.5 also stopped griefers from instantly ending the game on join. Patch 1.0.9 added a main-menu Steam Relay debug if initialization fails.

One player hosts. Friends join through Steam or an invite to a private lobby. Everyone shares the same islands, the same Radar unlocks, and the same physics mess. Individual weapons still live on each character. If versions mismatch, verify game files — mixed patches refuse sessions.

Hosting and joining

Create a lobby from the main menu. For a public session, friends can Join Game from Steam. For a quiet run, host private and invite only. If Relay text turns red, restart Steam and read the developer #common-bugs notes before rebuilding the lobby ten times. Patch 1.0.10 increased the time allowed to connect so fewer people drop during handshake.

Server names cannot use special characters after 1.0.4 because they corrupted saves. If a phantom lobby named “Game Name” appears, you are on a build before the 1.0.6 save check, or the save is still damaged — see Troubleshooting.

Why co-op is faster

More rods mean more cash, but the real gain is combat. Spider Crab is awkward solo with fists and trivial with two knives. Giant Piranha minions get deleted faster. Mutated Bowhead Whale wants someone kiting while someone dumps Assault Rifle fire. Revives exist; use them instead of resetting the volcano sequence.

Split the island: one player farms the local lure pool, one watches for Drip names, one shops, one cooks. Do not all sell the same quest trophy. Call out shells, skeletons, fins, and heads. Patch 1.0.10 ground saves (64 items) let the group park a heal pile, but the cap still prioritizes weapons, tools, quest items, and creatures — a carpet of clams may not all return.

Roles for story bosses

  • Spider Crab: one bait caster, everyone else waits for the daze.
  • Giant Piranha: gunners on the boss, one person peeling minions.
  • Pufferfish: nobody runs the poison tail; stack cooked fish.
  • Albatross: protect the Tuna body until the bird commits.
  • Lava whale: rifle DPS on flat ground, designated eater, no boat escape.

Difficulty is a lobby conversation after 1.0.9. Easy halves incoming damage. Hard adds 25% health and 25% damage to every creature. Confirm the setting before the Carrot or Fish Bucket is spent. Details: Difficulty Settings.

Griefing and chat

Launch week had join-grief and rich-text chat abuse. 1.0.5 and 1.0.10 closed those holes. You can still dump dynamite under a friend’s boat — that is the Flying Boat joke — but do it with consent. Private lobbies exist for a reason.

Voice chat is still the best callout tool. In-game text is now plain. If voice fails, check Windows default devices before blaming the patch.
