How to Fish Gear Tier List — S to C Rankings
Every item ranked by effectiveness, value, and progression impact.
This tier list ranks every piece of gear in How to Fish from S-tier (best) to C-tier (basic). Rankings are based on effectiveness, value for coins, and impact on progression. This list was last updated after the August 20, 2026 launch.
S Tier — Best in Slot
These items are the best in their category. Prioritize buying them when you can afford them.
| Item | Type | Why S Tier |
|---|---|---|
| Master Rod | Rod | Maximum stats across all categories. The endgame rod with best tension, catch rate, and rarity bonuses. |
| Assault Rifle | Weapon | Best sustained DPS for boss fights. Reliable damage output with manageable recoil. |
| Rocket Launcher | Weapon | Massive burst damage. Limited ammo but devastating against bosses and groups. |
| Deep Sea Rod | Rod | Exceptional tension for the biggest fish. Best for legendary and boss fish. |
A Tier — Excellent
Great items that perform well in most situations. Buy these if S-tier items are too expensive.
| Item | Type | Why A Tier |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon Rod | Rod | Best mid-game rod for the price. Solid catch rate and decent tension. |
| Shotgun | Weapon | Excellent close-range damage. Ideal for aggressive fish and seagull bursts. |
| Grenade Launcher | Weapon | Area damage for adds and bosses. Clears groups efficiently. |
| Trick Rod | Rod | Enhanced trajectory for trick shots. If you farm trick shots, this pays for itself. |
| Speed Boat | Boat | Fast travel between islands. More fishing time, less travel time. |
B Tier — Good
Solid choices that get the job done. Good for mid-game progression.
| Item | Type | Why B Tier |
|---|---|---|
| Steel Rod | Rod | Reliable upgrade from starter gear. Decent stats at a reasonable price. |
| Pistol | Weapon | Cheap and effective early game. Serviceable until you can afford better. |
| SMG | Weapon | Fast fire rate, good for clearing fish. Lower damage per bullet but volume helps. |
| Rowboat | Boat | Basic island travel. Slow but cheap. Upgrade to Speed Boat when you can afford it. |
| Reinforced Rod | Rod | High tension, good for boss fights. Niche pick over Carbon Rod unless you struggle with tension. |
C Tier — Basic
Starter gear that you will replace as soon as possible.
| Item | Type | Why C Tier |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Rod | Rod | Starting equipment. Functional but limited. Upgrade to Steel or Carbon Rod immediately. |
| Slingshot | Weapon | Starter weapon. Quickly outclassed. Switch to Pistol as soon as possible. |
| Wooden Rod | Rod | Slight upgrade from basic. Not worth buying — save for Steel Rod. |
| Harpoon Gun | Weapon | Slow and niche. Better options exist at every price point. |
