How to Fish Story — Crash, Five Islands, Home

A party boat, a rock, and a trophy chain that Patch 1.0.5 made mandatory.

Story & Lore Guide

How to Fish does not ship a novel. Dazed Games has not published a named wreck, a crash clock, or a lore bible that explains the archipelago. What you get is a campaign you can play: a drunk crew hits something, you wake on a lighthouse rock, and the only way home is a five-island quest chain. This page sticks to that on-screen story. Invented names like Meridian, Storm Lord, or First Guardian are not used here.

The tone is slapstick, not a survival documentary. You still feed a seadog, steal back beer, and punch a crab until it drops a Shell. The joke sits on top of a strict unlock order. Patch 1.0.5 removed sailing to islands you have not earned, so the story is linear even if the physics is chaos.

The crash and Island 1

You start after the wreck on the Lighthouse island. Clams keep you alive. The Lighthouse Keeper is the shop, the quest board, and the person who wants his beer back. Who stole my beer is the first story beat: buy Beer, give him the full can, keep the Empty Beer Can, bait the Spider Crab, and return the Shell. Boat Keys and a $10 Radar are the exit. That is the whole opening act. There is no separate merchant NPC and no tutorial grill on this rock.

Forest, Desert, Rocks

Island 2 (Forest) belongs to the lake / forest lady. She wants three ground leeches, then a Giant Piranha on Modified Leech bait. Dinnertime is the Skeleton hand-in, not a plated meal. Dynamite in her shop is the I’m the bird now gag, not a plot skip.

Island 3 (Desert) belongs to the Tourist. An endangered catch (Needlefish, Bowl Fish, or Seahorse) is Vacation and produces the Carrot. The Carrot baits Pufferfish. The Blue Shark on a Standard Boss Lure is the grill / Grillmaster side beat. Cooked fish is a heal pipeline for the rest of the campaign, not a lore buffet.

Island 4 (Rocks) is the bird island. Professional Boss Lure → Tuna → drop the body → Albatross. Terrorizing bird is the fight; the head is the travel gate. NPCs hide in huts because the bird attacks from the air. Patch 1.0.10 fixed a soft-lock if you died to Tuna as the bird spawned.

Volcano and the ending you can see

Island 5 is military / volcano. The scientist wants five native fish for a Fish Bucket, then a Bowhead Whale, then that carcass in the crater. The Mutated Bowhead Whale is the last story fight. Hand the Whale Fin in, take the military / RHIB keys, and sail to the mainland. We are so back is the Steam name for finishing. Credits roll. You can still roam unlocked islands afterward for Fishipedia, skins, and gambling.

That is the documented ending. There is no official letter about cycles, no Storm Lord credits shot, and no confirmation that the islands are an immune system. If you want a metaphor, bring your own. The game gives rods, guns, and a Fin.

What the NPCs actually do

Progression is trophy hand-ins, not a rotating merchant inventory. The keeper gates the boat. The forest lady gates the Desert. The Tourist gates the Carrot and later island coordinates after the puffer. The scientist gates the whale sequence and the sail home. Details live on NPCs and the Walkthrough. Difficulty from Patch 1.0.9 changes combat math, not dialogue. Co-op shares the same Radar; the host’s trophies are the lobby’s map.
