How to Fish Crafting, Cooking & Item Combinations
Leeches, Whale Bait, trophy hand-ins, and weapon sharpening. No separate crafting bench — these blend into the world.
How to Fish does not have a dedicated crafting menu or workbench screen. Crafting here means combining items in the world: handing trophies to NPCs, converting ground pickups into bait, sharpening weapons on anvils, and throwing fish into lava. This page documents every documented craft through Patch 1.0.10.
Players arriving from survival crafting games expect a menu. The game does not provide one. The closest thing to a craft interface is the NPC interaction wheel and the anvil. Everything else is world-object manipulation.
Modified Leech — Forest Island Boss Bait
The Giant Piranha on Island 2 is not summoned with a shop lure. You craft the bait.
- Explore the Forest island ground and collect three leeches. They appear as small ground pickups, not fish.
- Find the forest lady NPC and give her the three leeches.
- She converts them into Modified Leech bait.
- Use the Modified Leech on your rod to summon the Giant Piranha.
Modified Leech is consumed on use. You get one attempt per craft. The Giant Piranha has 2,500 HP and drops a Skeleton for the Dinnertime achievement. If you lose the fight, you need three more leeches and another trip to the forest lady.
Whale Bait — Volcano Island Finale Chain
Whale Bait is the key to the Island 5 finale sequence.
- Catch five fish native to the Volcano island.
- Bring them to the scientist NPC near the volcano.
- He converts them into Whale Bait.
- Use Whale Bait on your rod to summon the Bowhead Whale.
- After defeating the Bowhead Whale, throw the carcass into the volcano.
- The lava triggers the Mutated Bowhead Whale — the final story boss.
This is the clearest craft chain in the game. Each step is a distinct world interaction. Patch 1.0.10 saves ground items up to 64 objects, so a fish pile for the scientist persists between sessions if the pile was prioritized.
Trophy Hand-Ins — NPC Conversions
Several story beats require giving a specific trophy to an NPC. This is a one-way conversion:
| Trophy | NPC | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Spider Crab Shell | Lighthouse Keeper | Boat Keys + Radar |
| Giant Piranha Skeleton | Forest Lady | Dinnertime achievement |
| Endangered Fish | Tourist | Carrot bait |
| Albatross Head | Rocks NPC | Volcano Radar unlock |
| Bowhead Fin | Military NPC | Final island unlock |
Trophies consumed this way do not return. Do not hand in a Drip variant if you still need the normal form for Fishipedia. Drip variants do respawn, but the tracking issue from Patch 1.0.5 was only partially resolved for Voxelfish.
Anvil Weapon Sharpening
Some islands have an anvil near the shop. When you have a Knife equipped, interact with the anvil to sharpen it. A sharpened Knife deals more damage and breaks slower. The sharpening is permanent until the Knife breaks.
Not every island has an anvil. The Lighthouse does. Check the island layout before assuming you can sharpen mid-session. If an island gives you a Knife but no anvil, use the Knife as-is and prioritize buying a replacement before bosses.
Cooking as Craft
Cooking on the Island 3 grill or in Volcano lava is a craft in the broad sense. You are transforming raw fish into healing food.
- Pull the fish at the right moment for cooked healing.
- Leave it longer and it burns — value collapses, but eating the burnt fish unlocks Yummy in my tummy.
- Lava cooks faster than the desert grill, roughly 1.5× the speed.
Patch 1.0.10 lets you dip weapons and tools in water to remove cooking residue. If a gun looks breaded after a cook session, dunk it.
What Is Not Crafting
Players sometimes conflate the following with crafting:
- Lure tiers: Buying a better lure from a shop is a purchase, not a craft. The lure goes on your rod, not into a workbench.
- Attachments: Buying attachments from a shop and equipping them to a weapon is an upgrade, not a craft.
- Engine upgrades: Buying a faster engine is a purchase, not a craft.
- Co-op item sharing: Dropping items for other players is logistics, not crafting.
